Eco Elites

Meet Gordon Primary School’s sustainability team, the Eco Elites!

The Eco Elites are a student-led team, guided by Mrs Conlan. They meet every second week during lunchtime. Eco Elites help spread sustainability messages to the rest of the school and are responsible for emptying classroom recycling and compost bins.

Gordon Primary is working towards becoming a 5 star certified ResourceSmart school. ResourceSmart Schools sustainability certification involves demonstrating continuous improvement against the baseline we set in the areas of biodiversity, energy, waste and water. Gordon Primary successfully completed the Core Module at the end of 2025 to achieve our first star.

At the end of the year we celebrated our achievements with a Smartie Party! The team reflected on the actions we have taken in 2025:

  • Updated bin signage to help students, teachers and parents easily identify what belongs in each bin.
  • Transformed cardboard boxes into recycling bins for every classroom.
  • Begun collecting containers for the Container Deposit Scheme.
  • Introduced compost bins in the 3/4 and 5/6 classrooms, redirecting food waste from landfill into our school compost.

The team has many more great ideas for next year, so stay tuned for more exciting student led initiatives!
